NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, was not quick to announce this decision promptly after his victory in November.

"This decision came down to the security of my family and the need to dedicating all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will always live a part of me and the work I do," he added.

A Contentious Issue

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

However his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it should be a place for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.

Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
