Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
