Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular sci-fi show wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
