Ultra-Conservative Ex- Legislator J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile Next President.
After a definitive final ballot, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
With more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having earlier been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Campaign Built On Security and Migration
Known for his unwavering Catholic views and regard for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily centered on promises to combat increasing violence and drastically curb immigration.
He frequently cited immigrants, especially the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the new term begins or face deportation.
His policy ideas included Trump-inspired measures such as building holding facilities, high walls, security fences, and strengthening the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Within a Broader Wave
Many analysts view Kast's success as fitting into a broader right-wing shift in Latin America, following this year's electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other pundits additionally frame it as a continuation of the established alternation of power between left and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Strong Mandate
Despite his decisive popular vote victory, Kast does not command an absolute majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if various right-leaning parties are counted together.
This political landscape might challenge his policy goals, including a pledge to reduce public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not offered specifics.
"There are several things about how a Kast presidency will be that we don't know because he has not explained the way he will achieve them," commented a political professor.
The expert continued, "In terms of the economy, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures common for the right. But the area with much less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue throughout the campaign."
