When I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and being named best player.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.

Currently, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
