The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he will independently develop the controversial flavor as part of an individual collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
This latest development escalates the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed how Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor becoming an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur revealed via social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Activism and Current Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that was first established several years back to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed how he will create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, citing concerns that its independence was undermined after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
