The photographer stated that he initially learned about the operation in the early hours by residents living in Alemão, who reached out informing him an armed confrontation was occurring.
The eyewitness went to the healthcare center, where the casualties were coming in.
Itan explained that law enforcement stopped members of the press from going into the Penha neighborhood, where the security measures were occurring.
"Police officers created a barrier and said: 'Journalists are not allowed to pass'."
But Itan, who was raised in the community, stated he managed to enter into the cordoned-off area, where he remained until the next morning.
He reported that evening, community members commenced searching the mountainous area which divides Penha from the adjacent Alemão area for relatives who had been missing since the police raid.
Residents living in Penha organized the discovered victims in an open area - the documented evidence display the response of the people there.
"The harsh reality of it all shook me deeply: the grief of relatives, women collapsing, expectant spouses, crying, furious relatives," the eyewitness remembered.
