Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead for World Cup In Spite of Objections from Iran and Egypt

Plans for LGBTQ+ rights celebrations throughout the city amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, despite Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced objections regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. These events will take place around the Group G fixture featuring Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags inside the stadium.

“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s role is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the city experience outside of the match venue,” stated the vice-president of communications.

Cultural Background Behind the Formal Complaints

Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be associated with events that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance on Symbols

Fifa maintains full authority over match venues on matchdays. Although it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was applied at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of flags being seized.

  • This special fixture was an idea created to showcase Seattle’s longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
  • A design contest has been commissioned to produce artwork celebrating the event.
  • Planners have pledged to ensuring every visitor are welcomed in the city throughout the 48-team competition.

The Pacific Northwest hosts a significant largest Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing everyone experience the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our region,” the statement concluded.
