Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, responding to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's response pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.

What Sparked the Latest Exchange

The quarterback's response came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' remarkable comeback victory over the New York. Payton remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • Wilson was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million contract.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.
  • Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.

If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the ugly split between the quarterback and his mentor.
