Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
