Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities shared security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
