Jailhouse Surprise: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He contested justice and justice prevailed.

Two months following receiving a 27-year sentence for attempting to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.

Expected Incarceration

The found-guilty plotter – who has been subject to residential detention in his residence while a set of court processes and challenges proceed – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the coming days, amidst growing rumors that he will be moved to a infamous top-security facility.

Past Statements on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the right-wing former paratrooper exhibited scant sympathy for the country's inmates.

“What’s the need to provide those dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be messed, end of story. That's my opinion.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to wind up behind bars, the only thing required is to avoid rape, kidnap or theft.”

Jail Facility Debate

Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, a group of four this week visited the facility in an apparent effort to prevent the high court from transferring him there.

Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, claimed he expected the 70-year-old figure to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute digestive issues – the consequence of a near-fatal knife attack during the last election race – implied it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is highly critical. He won’t be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” said the senator, who also worried about packed cells and the quality of prison meals.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells containing 40 detainees: “That is virtually one square meter per detainee.

“We conversed to the prisoners and they protest, of course, of the terrible meals,” remarked the senator.

Supporters React

The senator isn't the only voice speaking out before the ex-leader's expected detention.

Penning in a major publication, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and asserted Brazil was about to see “the greatest wrong in its record”.

“It is an unfairness that erodes the hearts of millions of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Public Response

It is possibly accurate due to the considerable backing Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. But his predicted incarceration has also pleased the hearts of millions other people who believe he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to stop his successor from taking power – and even plotting to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the incumbent administration's political party, stated: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. No one desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to obtain dignified handling – but proper treatment while incarcerated. He can’t persist being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time celebrating the tough conditions of prisoners, had suddenly realized to their rights. “Just now has the extreme right – which has consistently claimed that basic rights are not for offenders – decided to inspect a penitentiary to learn what conditions are actually like,” he said.

“The former president is a offender,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, insulting conduct”.

Likely Jail Facilities

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which presently holds about thousands of inmates, his expected destination appears to be a close jail for police officers and other “unique” prisoners known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

The accommodations are much more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro had while living in the stunning leader's home, around 12 miles away.

According to sources, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – about the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and features a 130 square foot WC with a bathing area and a 12 square meter terrace. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and also a minibar in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” information stated.

Political Reactions

The lawmaker condemned the rumoured idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a form of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his fate in the {
