Israeli citizens mark two-year remembrance of October 7th attacks as Gaza peace talks continue
Citizens have come together across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.
The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not pose a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the families of people who died in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A prominent Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an night meeting of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The official stated the day's discussions finished without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He added that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to close the disparities between the both parties.
Essential Matters in Negotiations
- A lasting ceasefire
- The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict administration of the area
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the assault on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place seems like home any longer and until every captive come back none of us will have peace of mind."
"When we see everybody home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can start to recover," she added.
In front of the leader's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Activist one woman remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the captives to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around the majority of Israelis want the conflict to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Situation
At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli shelling carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"When the dusk arrives, the dread arrives with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, especially my youngest child who puts his head on me all night."
"Continuously we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had received the bodies of six people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the south region of the city indicated another two victims had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli forces while looking for help to the south, medics stated.
