Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
