European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial news:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
